Why does Dr. Hauschka no longer produce sun screen?
This is a question I often get asked as an esthetician . The answer is sadly down to regulations.
The official statement we recieved from Dr. Hauschka reads as follows:
Our sunscreen products used the well known and accepted Australian Standard to measure our UVA protection which is a 90% filter. The EU Commission on Standards has stated that sun protection must now have a ratio of 1:3 UVA to UVB protection, which we were not able to reach with our natural physical sun protection. This EU requirement ratio is not difficult to achieve for chemical sun protection factors (those products that you wait for ½ hour before exposure to the sun). Whereas with natural mineral titanium dioxide, it works as a physical pigment that remains on the surface of the skin and performs with an extremely high UVB protection. It’s this high performing UVB aspect that makes the ratio difficult to achieve with the technology we have at this time.
